| Introduction
and Aims of the course
The direction of actors is, certainly, a crucial aspect in the creative
process of an audiovisual fiction product. It is also a complex tool based
on the interaction between actors and director. For this reason, it brings
a great range of approaches, schools and methodologies. One of the aims
of the course is to reflect part of this plurality thanks to the numerous
professional points of view provided by the teachers.
Obviously, the most sophisticated elaboration takes place
in the theatrical context. This is why we think it appropriate to start
from a generalist perspective based on the scenic tradition, even though
the basic aim of the course is the direction of actors within the audiovisual
field.
This fact will also let us be more aware of the differences
when it comes to deal with the direction of actors in the audiovisual
field (presence and intervention of the camera, interpretative discontinuity,
etc.). It is crucial to differentiate the cinema production perspective
(one only camera, rehearsals, etc.) from the perspective of the specifically
television product (multicamera, accelerated rhythm of production, etc.).
The interaction actors-director is one of the key issues
at work. The participation of professional actors provides and “inward”
vision and sets the student in an almost “real” context.
To learn to direct one must direct. That is why the course ends with the
preparation, the shooting and the edition of projects directed entirely
by the students under the supervision of a professional.
In short, the aims of this course are to give the
students a theoretical background and to let them experience how the various
professionals from several fields work on the direction of actors, and
to give them the practical and methodological tools for the practice of
this discipline.
